Who are we, Part 2: The Next Generation

Following in the footsteps of Grandma and Grandad, daughter Tanny and son-in-law David are now proudly starting their journey taking the helm, carrying on the heart and soul of our family-run Thai restaurant.

This September, we’re (fingers crossed 🤞🏽) celebrating 33 years of serving our community. It hasn’t been easy, the past few years have tested all of us and the rising cost of living has made it even tougher to dine out for most. The last few months, having lost grandma has had a huge impact on us all.

But we’re still here. Still cooking. Still passionate. Still wanting to see and serve you all.

We’re introducing small, thoughtful changes and new ideas that we hope you’ll love all while staying true to our roots. Even our little ones are rolling up their sleeves, ready to be part of the journey 🥰

Happy Father’s Day to our founder and owner, who we now lovingly call Grandad. The sacrifices he’s made for our family are unmatched. We appreciate all that you do. If you’re lucky, you’ll still get to taste his incredible cooking.

This is where we began. Two people fell in love, started a family and worked hard to build a better life. They came to the UK with no money, barely any English but endless determination.

Grandad started at the bottom, cleaning pots, mopping floors and worked his way up to become sous chef for 16 years at the InterContinental Hotel in Hyde Park Corner.

Grandma (may she rest in peace) didn’t speak English when she arrived. But her love for cooking and sharing her Thai heritage brought people together. She began taking orders from home, creating dishes that reminded many of their own families and roots. From this, their dream was born.

Every dish on our menu was created by them, together. Their passion, resilience and love for Esarn culture shaped what we are today, a family-run restaurant serving Thai food straight from the heart.

The Puntar family has been running Esarn Kheaw for 32 years. Now, the next generation is stepping in. Big bro Thames is off pursuing new passions, while little sis Tanny and her husband David, with their 4 little ones will be keeping the legacy alive.

Thank you for being part of our journey.
Here’s to another 30+ years of delicious food and family spirit.

สุขสันต์วันสงกรานต์ Happy Songkran to everyone!

Yesterday we visited @buddhapadipatemplelondon to celebrate Thai New Year.

Songkran is a time for purification, blessings, showing gratitude to our elders and ancestors, and spending meaningful time with family. We were fortunate to do all of this together. Once the crowds had eased at the festival, we enjoyed plenty of delicious Thai food and built sand pagodas—Chedi Sai—a traditional symbol of merit-making in Buddhism.

This was our first Songkran without our beloved mother, but we felt her presence throughout the day. Thinking of her while making merit brought warmth to our hearts. She instilled in us a deep love for our culture and heritage, and we will carry it forward for the next generation.

Wishing you all joy, happiness and good health for the year ahead.

What a wonderful day to highlight our late founder Mrs Puntar. Here she is cooking her cucumber salad recipe. The choice of using a cucumber is that it is easily accessible for you to try at home, as well as it being a light, fresh and delicious Thai salad.

Not only did she spread joy through her love of cooking, but she was also kind and considerate to all. In any bad situation, she was always able to see the positive and encouraged everyone to be kind to one another. She wasn’t just a mother, wife, chef or restaurateur, unintentionally she was a Buddhist philosopher who lead by example within her community. Despite her well respected stature within the community, she was humble, grounded and always remembered her roots. She encouraged understanding and kindness to all and always spoke her mind in the most respectful way to others.
